The illusion, the proud claim
is that we learn from history,
as persons, groups of people,
nations, as a civilization.
We don't, the evidence
is all around us,
throughout the world,
Gaze at blighted Albion:
A government announcing
a new Holocaust memorial
is at the same time actively
helping an ongoing genocide,
trying to block arrest warrants
for those committing.

Putting up a memorial
for a genocide that ended
seventy-nine years ago
doesn't show we would've learned
the simple lesson that
genocides are always wrong;
ending the multiple ongoing
genocides would.
But we don't, because
we haven't learned.
Like children before
teacher History
we lie we have learned
our lesson
while repeating
the crime of genocide.
