Just a moment ago the trees
stood yet green in the night air,
now they are black silhouettes
against the darkening blue,
and I'm sitting here, in this
electrical halo separating
me from the night that
has fallen, listening to
Nick Drake's River Man,
thinking whether I can make
myself translate Philip Larkin,
sipping coffee and wondering
what colour her satin mini dress
might be, would it be dark blue
like the sky tonight?
