The dead mingle on the streets of Gaza City's
eastern Shujayea neighbourhood after
Israel's occupation forces withdrew again;
bodies of dozens killed in the last few days,
and bodies from a cemetery Israel destroyed,
scattering remains, entombing some
into an earthen rampart, with limbs
sticking out. The dead mingle: Flesh
that was warm but a day ago, flesh
that is decomposing, bones devoid of flesh -
like the buildings ripped out of their facades
and roofs, hollow edifices giving mute
testimony to the lives that were,
like the dead bodies mingling on
the rubble-filled streets of Shujayea.
