His reaction to death
had always been to turn
towards embrace of the primal
instincts of life; in many ways
it was a cowardly act, to
let the reality of death be
hidden under those primal
urges, the feelings of sorrow
to be overwhelmed, if only
briefly, by them; it was
the fearful animal in him
flinching, shrinking from
death, driven into a rut to
hide from itself the smell
and touch of death, memory
of the weight of bodies
growing stiff - and the fact
that it would happen to it also.
