Is it better to be innocent than cunning,
even when innocence can cause distress?
At least it's unintentional, if that can be
any defence (and it's a poor defence, like
a child's who has broken something
after not being careful enough),
yet distress is distress. And perhaps
a cunning person would be able
to avoid causing distress, not because
of kindness or gentleness, but because
they would read human minds better,
would know how to chart a path
that would lead them to their goal
without the other person suffering
any distress or harm. Perhaps,
perhaps the cunning person in
their scheming is more merciful,
better for their fellow human beings
than the innocent who doesn't notice
all the broken pieces they leave
in their wake for others to pick up
with bloodied fingers.
